CDiffControl Preventive treatment assessment
ASSUMPTIONS:
01.
The extra cost of treating a hospitalized C. Difficile patient, is estimated to be $25,000. We will use $20,000 in our calculations.
02.
We estimate there are 7.5 million patients admitted to U. S. hospitals annually, who fit our criteria of >=65 and taking antibiotics.
03.
A typical hospital with 50,000 annual admissions would have 12,000 target patients.
04.
The C. Difficile infection rate in this group is between 2.5% and 5%.
05.
Our CDiffControl preventive treatment costs $450 per patient and is presumed 90% effective.

At the 5% infection rate and treating 12,000 patients at $450 each will cost $5.4M but will save (540 x $20,000) $10.8M, for a 2:1 payback. At the 2.5% infection rate, treatment cost is $5.4M while saving $5.4M or break even, while also likely saving over 15+ lives (normal mortality is 6% but typically higher in this age group).
